SALON 27: A Gatekeeper~A Sorcerer's Apprentice~A Solemn Oath
I remember as a child being confused at the concepts that we lived "on the earth" and "in the world". Trying to sort out adult jargon. Ultimately of course I came to understand it's both, in and on. That the earth was one thing and the world another. And yet the same. Everything in me is resisting introducing to you, in any linear fashion, these two reality spinners who reside with us ON the earth and are doing magic IN the world - Joseph Rosado and ShaRi Brooks. Instead, please just take a look at the images they decided to share with us in this Salon, and then if you are even the least bit tweaked or curious...ask a question...and consider joining us all at The Chalice Well in March 2009. (More to follow later on the exact itinerary, dates, etc.)
JOSEPH ROSADO and SHARI BROOKS each currently reside IN Albuquerque, New Mexico USA ON Planet Earth. They were both gifted into my life by Rick Allen after he left us all to become a spiritual warrior. And he's been VERY active, by the way!
Joseph, you have spoken to me before about the way you ask for your "mission" or assignment" each day. How does this connect with your renewed energy to share your photography?
Joseph, you have spoken to me before about the way you ask for your "mission" or assignment" each day. How does this connect with your renewed energy to share your photography? JOSEPH: - It's been quite a number of years since I've exhibited my photography for anything other than a workshop. In this case my assignment was to make a connection with ShaRi and bring her on board to Water/Wind/Stone, the main company used for all my retreats and journeys. The purpose was to give her a strong vehicle and tools by which she can teach others, through the power of her Mandalas, to liberate themselves. At the same time, more than meet her financial needs. After all, we did not take vows of poverty. ShaRi at some point will become a facilitator of her own workshops with my help and contacts. So you might say that my assignment was to use my photography to develop a series of ten day workshops at the Chalice Well and Gardens in Glastonbury, as a way to introduce ShaRi and her work to the participants, but more importantly become one with the energy of the Chalice Well and its mystical surroundings.
MICHELLE: Obviously there are experiential elements common to all who take part in the kind of retreat as you are planning at Glastonbury. What does the experience of being a spiritual guide or shaman for such a retreat do for your own art and spirit?
MICHELLE: Obviously there are experiential elements common to all who take part in the kind of retreat as you are planning at Glastonbury. What does the experience of being a spiritual guide or shaman for such a retreat do for your own art and spirit? JOSEPH: This is a very good question. First, I don't consider myself a shaman or a spiritual guide. What I am is a Gatekeeper, and by doing what I do, I am doing my life's work, which is to help "liberate people, to set them free." So every time I do a new journey, I am the same person working on another level. Every workshop, every journey, every soul that walks past my gate brings me to another level. I learn so much from those that participate in my retreats. This is why ShaRi and her work and the Chalice Well as a venue is a perfect alchemy for achieving the goal.

MICHELLE: I love that term "Gatekeeper". I'm rather fond of threshholds myself! So...what is your personal connection to the Chalice Well, Glastonbury?
JOSEPH: My personal connection to Chalice Well is that I was Co-Guardian there with my then partner, from late 1995 to the end of 1998. Together we made positive changes, and left a lasting legacy.

MICHELLE: I've watched you make positive changes in more than one place in the short time I have known you...if you had unlimited resources, funding, support, etc. do you have a dream project you would do in the artistic and/or spiritual realms?
JOSEPH: Yes, A World Centre - A Centre for Healing and Understanding. This was my assignment while I was Guardian of the Chalice Well. So I wrote the Document of Intention to be built on 30 acres. I have this document to this day, which was received with great enthusiasm by the city planners and Counselors, but fell short of funding. It was so radical of a project that it made sense! It created over 450 jobs, 220 accommodations, 2 restaurants, shops, multi level theater with workshop space and lecture rooms, library, 7 sanctuaries - one for each chakra. Oh please don't let me get started! A revised document is available, I can attach via email...Yes, let's teach others how to build these centres and have them all over the world! And while we're at it , let's lay a few crystals underneath for good measure.

MICHELLE: Maybe someone out there will read this and contact you on that! Meanwhile, what would you advise to someone who wanted to do a vision quest but did not know where to begin?
JOSEPH: I have a workshop just for that purpose. Or a private consultation via phone or email. Jot down my contact information for a free initial consultation. Joseph Rosado, nativesoil@aol.com Office - 505-404-0838 Cell - 505-414-5171
MICHELLE: What feeds your muse, your soul?
MICHELLE: I would like to point out to our Salon visitors that the first photographs you see here were taken by Joseph of the Chalice Well, stunning pieces. And the other photos of Glastonbury here are by him also, to give you a sense of the peace of the place and the well itself. I met Joseph a few years ago at a New Age event in Colorado and we became soul siblings at first sight! I can only tell you that in his presence is a feeling of almost childlike happiness yet a very practical, adult groundedness. He inspires one not just to dream, but to take action on the dream...just by being himself. There is a lot of lot of lot of light coming from this man.

Now onto ShaRi...as this Salon celebrates the joining of two powerful forces and world spinners through their work. To contrast what I feel in Joseph's presence, in ShaRi's presence I feel connected to the essential. A sense of not dealing at all in superficialities, yet a very light feeling.

ShaRi is sharing with us here some of her recent work, her "wOMandalas". I will provide a link to her blog so you can see more of these. I will leave it to her to tell you more about them as we get into our discussion. But first some questions...
MICHELLE: ShaRi, How does doing the mandalas relate to your spirituality and/or sense of your purpose on the planet?
MICHELLE: ShaRi, How does doing the mandalas relate to your spirituality and/or sense of your purpose on the planet? SHARI: I first discovered the mandala thru Jungian psychology in my post graduate studies in art therapy. We were to portray an emotion that we had had that day. Mine had to do with anger. The image that came out of that exercise was a somewhat chaotic, broken~glass~shards type of image in reds and orange. It did seem to have a kind of motion to it though. The image moved into my subconscious, and quickly morphed into a succession of dream mandalas, and the emotion morphed along with them. The anger was transformed into a sense of peace and calm.
Thus began my path of discovery of the magical and primordial energy of the mandala. This quote from Peter de Jong (http://members.home.nl/imskaar/Website/index.html) sums up pretty explicitly how the making of mandalas affects me personally; I experience mandala making as a way of centering oneself. The concentration which is needed is like a training of the mind, learning how to focus one's attention on the here and now. I experience this as a form of meditation, a way of reaching inner peace and balance.'
As for my sense of purpose on the planet, it was thru these same art therapy classes and Jungian psychology that I also discovered the archetype, or universally shared imagery, of which the mandala is the most primordial and universal. It is a unifying force, of which we are in desperate need of here in this point in space and time. The mandala is also a force of centering and balance, something that is also much needed, both personally and globally, on our planet today. My statement, 'We may take different paths, but we all end up at and emanate from the same center', has long been at the core of my sense of being and coming into being.

MICHELLE: There is a lot of digital magic in your process with the mandalas. When you do "non-digital" artwork and then when you do digital artwork, is there a difference in terms of where the work takes you?
SHARI: Having recently done a collage, my first non-digital creation in quite some time, I am actually able to answer this question! I would say no. The act of creation has the same affect, no matter what media is used. The computer is just another paintbrush that we use to bring into fruition visions from the ethers. Making real the ethereal :)

MICHELLE: So how much of an element of surprise is there, for you as the artist, in doing the mandalas? Do you have a "pre-vision" of how each piece will turn out or is it something like raku where you put elements from around you together and see what comes out of the kiln?
SHARI: It is very much like Raku. (my favorite form of pottery~making, BTW, and the name of one of my kitties) There is always surprise and delight as the faeries, spirits and creatures reveal themselves as the whole starts to come together. It is also fascinating to see what kind of pattern comes into being at the center. There is no pre-vision, other than an inquiry of the Source photo as to what kind of 'pie' it wants to be. Most of the wOMandalas are made by inserting a piece of a photo into a slice o' pie template, then rotating them into place next to one another. It is at the seam where the slices come together that the patterns and totems reveal themselves, or come out of the kiln as it were.

MICHELLE: So it's an interface where the interest is created...and what about that interface between daily reality and creative time? Do you have rituals before you begin your work? What kind of space do you work in, do you require solitude, etc. We love to hear the details!
SHARI: No rituals here, just the ever present urge to create. Solitude is, and has always been, an inherent part of my life, so whether I require it or not, is a question I can't answer. Solitude is, however, the way I have apparently been given to experience this lifetime, and it would appear that my creativity is most likely a product of that solitude.

MICHELLE: Solitude is indeed a blessing...so, as an artist, if you had unlimited resources, funding, support, etc. what would you do?
SHARI: I would travel the world over, holding free and/or fund~raising mandala workshops, in hopes of bringing the healing and unifying power of this Wheel of Medicine to as many different venues on the planet as possible. I would also gift anyone that wanted one, one of my wOMandalas, or perhaps ask for payment in the form of a solemn oath to in some way or another make a contribution to peace on the planet. And, of course, advance the cause of the GreenMan & wOMan as well. After all, there can be no peace without a peaceful environment, without the trees and animals, without plentiful clean air and water, and without freedom 2Bee.
MICHELLE: ShaRi, can you tell me a bit about the convergence of your work and Joseph Rosado's, especially regarding the upcoming retreats at Glastonbury in March 2009?
MICHELLE: ShaRi, can you tell me a bit about the convergence of your work and Joseph Rosado's, especially regarding the upcoming retreats at Glastonbury in March 2009? SHARI: I am the Sorcerer's Apprentice, right now, hoping that all those broomsticks don't get out of hand!

Thank you both...
Blessings...

I enjoyed your photography, Joseph! :o)
I enjoyed your artwork,
ShaRi Brooks'! :o)
And i enjoyed your happy face! :o)
In reading the introduction again I got stuck. I think it unfortunate that these two people were introduced as "reality spinners". My experience tells me that nobody is cosmically minded enough, or spiritulized enough to have even a faint idea of what reality is. We are all entry-level cells in eternity, much too limited to even guess at the magnitude of reality.
If we define reality as our day-to-day living by what we think, feel, see, touch, etc, then we separate ourselves from the expanse of life essentials not accessible due to human limitations.
It is important that we all do as we are drawn to do to raise our level of sensitivity to the truth and beauty that surrounds us. As for the good; were we to really understand the value of what that words suggest, we would not be living in the deplorable conditions we have created.
How can one spin reality if there was understanding of what is real. One spins to explain what we experience to fit what we choose to think, or what we choose for others to think.
In spite of the beauty that in our limited way we do create, we have as much idea about reality as any ocean creature does about the water they live in.
As ever, there are many layers to what you say here...I guess I was thinking, when I used the words "spinners", about the creative process as one way a person tries to see, interpret, even just experience, get inside "reality", that evasive thing. I guess I was thinking that I never feel any one human being has the whole answer to the eternal questions of why we are here, what we are, etc. So I like to observe what others think it is all about...by what "spin" or "play" they try to touch that wholeness or reality. I have found that Joseph's philosophy/practicum of "assignments"...and ShaRi's mandalas...are uplifting, hopeful ways to go to a deeper place, and to USE the daily sensory data to do so.
I would certainly welcome any other thoughts on this, that one takes the time to read and comment is always of value here.
Take care,
Michelle
Here's my 'spin'; Reality is relative.
My ? is; Why is it so important to define it?
Brad lives in an ocean where all cells are equal. I live in an ocean where they are not. But guess what, it's the same ocean!
Where does Brad live? If all cells were equal there would be no ocean, no creatures, no Brad, no Shari, nothing to share.
Without a sense of Absolute there is no meaning to relativity. Of seven life principles I observe number four to be duality.
This is the second time I have wandered to the blog. I will admit, I'm confused. I'm not totally sure of the theme of discussion here and it's not Michelle's typical Salon.
I really like the photography but what really talks to me is the graphics. It just draws me in, spiritually. But the photography also touches me spiritually so maybe that is the them of this Salon.
I think I'm understanding what Brad is saying but my mind has been overtaxed with other concerns lately that I feel as if I'm functioning on information overload. However, in our limited humaness, isn't our own reality linked to our own personal perception? To me, the both go hand in hand.
Hi Debbie,
I agree. It's all one's perception. I love the imagery too, very much.
I've let this salon go on a bit longer than originally intended, mostly to let folks see the images. Also because my own current reality perception is preoccupied by the wee ghost of Shaka following me around (my dog companion of 9 years who had to go on 29th July)...and trying to locate a new buddy...
And with that in mind I will be posting a new salon sometime this week which is not entirely unrelated to animal familiars.
That salon will be up through September, then the salon will take a break til January whilst I escape to the Highlands and otherwise regroup over the Autumn. With new salons in 2009!
Do what you love and love what you do...
Michelle
I think the description "reality spinners" may be construed either way, depending on the person interpreting it.the very act of putting a spin on reality alters it, changes into something other than or more than reality! i think the work is a way of using reality as a starting point on which to spring board onto something more spiritual and metaphysical. i personally dont think all things are equal, i belive the sum of all the parts become bigger than the total.if you break things down to their minutest form everything would appear alike!! but in joining and reforming the building blocks of the world the sum of the parts can diminish or enhance!. anyway to get back to the images, i liked them very much and felt that they were something above reality! shari i think yours had a life of their own and Josephs reflected life but in a super charged way. also Michelle i wanted to express my sadness that Shaka is no longer in touching distance and i hope you find a new freind soon.
In returning from out of town I am surprised to find little beyond seabows response to Joseph and ShaRi. No one has mentioned about their coming together and sharing, the meaning or value of what they are doing. So much more is achievable when two or more come together, to do anything.
Let's face it, there is always beautiful art to look at, some we like and some we don't. What about the process that generates this beauty? What truths do these or any image represent? Images are only images, not real, they are only metaphorical symbols. What is the experiential reality images symbolize? Is it really only about perception? Is there a reason we agree and disagree to what might only be individual perception?
Debbie, what is "Michelle's typical Salon"? I don't mean to be flippant, but I guess my response will be cut short if it is not acceptable or off subject. Where are the limits of a sincere response to what is posted? It seems to me that there has been almost no response to this salon and that is not typical of Michelle's Salon.
I mentioned duality as the 4th principle of seven. Do we all know these principles and remain silent in common agreement, or is there quite disregard for suspicion of anything called principle, particular when talking about life? What are the principles that regulate anyone's life; interactions with family, other people, animals, ones art, the earth, not to mention the rest of the universe? Do we only follow our individual beliefs or are there other guides of a more comprehensive nature?
Seabows, you stated "i believe the sum of all the parts become bigger than the total." If I understand, you are meaning the whole is less than the sum of parts? I'm not sure what I am reading, possibly you mean the whole is larger than the sum of parts? I would be interested to hear more thoughts on the whole and the parts, given we are well into a generation of Wholefoods and Holistic health and thinking comprehensively about endless parts of all kinds. How does thinking about the whole impact our understanding and perception of a personal and shared reality?
I think it is crucial to question and give thought to the origin of parts, if not the whole then what, and if origin of endless parts is the whole, then there is functional organization or some underlying principles in ordering the parts.
So many big questions and we give time only for the little ones with short answers.
Maybe this has something to do with why Joseph is doing what he is doing, why he would even think about a Center of Healing and Understanding (the dictionary defines whole as health) and why he would feel ShaRi a part of what he is doing, and what does it mean to be a gatekeeper? Aren't we all gatekeepers to our own heart? It seems to me our job is to individually open the gate in a whole-hearted way. In doing that so much more becomes accessible for everyone.
Greetings all,
Hello seabows, it was SO good to see you here again! Thank you for the good thoughts on Shaka. While I miss him forever, yet feel his wee spirit alongside me (I am a believer in invisible dogs), I have taken on a new pup that needed a home. His name is Rebus and he's keeping me very busy!
Seabows, I like the way you refer to Joseph's and ShaRi's work, your phrasing says it for me.
I see we have a lengthy response from Brad and hope others will join in.
Brad, I'm not sure why a bigger dialogue has not taken place this time, can only apologize for my own part in that I have been very preoccupied and overwhelmed on several fronts for the past month at least...so didn't take my usual time to sort of shepherd this salon...also I left it in limbo because I meant to post the new one weeks ago but, again, due to both life and just liking to leave these beautiful images available longer...did not do so.
Finally, I think Debbie may have been referring to the interview format which is not typical to teh salon, true. It may have caused confusion and hence not much response from our two guests (who, under old format, would be more "hosts" than guests). It is an experiment to do the interview format but I surely also intend that the guests join in the discussion afterward, if they wish!
Brad, not sure what you mean by "cut short"; as I have explained in the salon a few times before, I never cut anyone's comments short and I never "not" post their comments unless it is spam or harrassment from someone not really taking part or anything personally mean-spirited. And the only thing I ever have actually edited or not allowed to appear has been spam, as the other negative possibilities have never appeared here.
I agree, Brad, with what you said about no one mentioning or further discussing the coming together of Joseph and ShaRi's efforts...I personally was so excited to hear about it happening but, then, I know these two people...and I have to admit the part of me that wishes she were still in New Mexico (while the rest of me is very entrenched in Scotland) would so much love to BE there and know I would be part of their process, in 3-D reality, on the ground. There is a generosity of spirit in what they are putting together, and a blind faith and an invitation to dance, to others.
Well, I hope there will be more said here, perhaps by Joseph and ShaRi themselves...at least you can't say our responses are not passionate around here!
Do what you love and love what you do.
Oh, and as for WHEN this salon switches over to the new one? I will switch it over by the 10th of September but first will check with the new guest to make sure that suits her schedule. Then I go on holiday at end of the month.
SpiritBear
Dear friends,
Thanks to teenagers breaking booze bottles in a field, my new puppy has been seriously injured and has taken up all my time plus other deadlines for the past 3 weeks trying to nurse him during recovery from surgery. We are now on the eve of our departure to the Highlands (with wee invalid puppy in tow) so I will go ahead and shut down the salon til I return in a few weeks and then will proceed with our next hostess. Thanks for your patience,
Michelle
